“I am the Lord your God who brought you out of the land of Egypt. You shall have no other Gods except me. You shall not make yourself a carved image or any likeness of anything in heaven or on earth beneath or in the waters under the earth; you shall not bow down to them or serve them.“ Exodus 20: 2-4a. However, Moses has only to be away a short time and the people make for themselves a Golden Calf and bow down before it.
